The time has come to end the Yulin Festival and the dog meat trade in China. Every year on this occasion at least 10 thousand dogs lose their lives, according to estimates for 2014 and 2015.

Animal Asia has kicked off a campaign to say stop at the Yulin Festival and to ensure that more and more dogs are saved from slaughter. One of the most tragic aspects of the situation concerns the kidnapping of dogs who are taken away from their homes by criminals who want an easy income and aim to put them up for sale.

Deng Yidan, director of the China Cats & Dogs Welfare Project, explained the five main reasons to immediately stop the Yulin Festival.

Dog meat puts public health at risk

There are very few dog farms left in China for meat production as both the costs of feeding the animals and the death and accident rates due to the stressful living conditions are too high in these facilities, coupled withhigh risk of diseases and infections. This also leads to a dog meat trade based on illegal slaughter, as well as cruel.

Dog theft is a danger to society

In 2013 alone, the Chinese media reported over 40 cases of accidents and deaths related to dog theft. Dogs are anesthetized or poisoned. And the stolen animals risk being sold in restaurants and brought to the table without the customers' knowledge.

Tradition should be part of progress

The progress of civilization requires that culture and traditions must be constantly reviewed. Someone traditions that no longer have anything to do with modern civilization they must be abolished. Traditional culture should not become an excuse for corruption and cruelty.

Public outrage is growing

More and more well-known personalities are intervening with appeals through the media to make sure that the Yulin Festival ends. Numerous successful campaigns have been run over the years and have been supported by large-scale online appeals. Abolishing the festivals dedicated to dog meat can be beneficial for the very image of the cities that decide to give them up.

The Yulin Festival does not give a nice picture of China

The Yulin Festival doesn't actually represent such an ancient tradition, as it only started in 1990, but from then on has really put China in a bad light, including criminal activities, dog theft, food hygiene problems, fear of the spread of rabies. The negative publicity outweighed the economic benefits.

In China, Animal Asia will support the dog rescue making sure they have food and veterinary care. He will participate in Yulin to keep all the media informed about the real situation of the dog meat trade, emphasizing that this market is based on crime, is cruel, unscrupulous and that its only goal is to make money.
