In the United States, about 70 dogs died and another 80 became ill after consuming pet food of the Sportmix brand, produced by the American company Midwestern Pet Foods. The pets would have been poisoned by the elevated levels of aflatoxins present in food. And the number of recalls of dangerous products is spreading like wildfire, not only in America but also in Asia.

The alarm went as far as Singapore. The government agency NParks has put citizens on guard, asking not to give the food in question to their four-legged friends and to immediately contact a veterinarian in case the dogs have ingested feed that could be contaminated.

The affair began in late December when the Midwestern Pet Foods company recalled some products after the Food and Drug Administration had received the report of the death of about 30 dogs. According to the FDA website, several samples were tested by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and found that they contained very high levels of aflatoxins. Unfortunately, the number of poisoned pets has grown rapidly in the meantime.

Aflatoxin is produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus and proliferates on cereals, often used as an ingredient in pet food. Taking high levels of aflatoxin can cause health problems, including vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, jaundice, and can even be fatal, as has been the case with dead dogs in the United States. Generally, animals are more vulnerable because, unlike people who eat a more varied diet, they eat the same foods for long periods and the aflatoxins present accumulate in their bodies, causing severe liver problems and even leading to death.
