The new Altroconsumo test analyzed 27 packs of dog food, reporting the best quality and most advantageous brands

However, it may not be easy to find your way around the choice as there are many brands and varieties of dog food. A new Altroconsumo test now comes to help with the purchase.
The magazine of the association that defends consumers wanted to test 27 different packs of dog food, especially croquettes. All products have been analyzed to evaluate their quality not only from a nutritional point of view but also from the raw material used.
The results
All the products have passed the test, that is, no one is advised against even if obviously there are differences in quality. There are dry dog food that is rated as excellent and other medium quality.
Altroconsumo specified the parameters it took into account to express the final judgment. It is about:
- energy density, i.e. the quantity of product necessary to reach the calories that represent the dog's daily ration
- the quantity and quality of proteins: the use of poor quality raw materials such as bones, cuts of meat with a lot of collagen or a lot of vegetable proteins help to lower the product score
- the quantity and quality of fats
- carbohydrates they can be present in contained quantities and treated in such a way as to be digestible for the dog
- the right balance of vitamins and minerals
- the possible presence of antiossidanti BHA e BHT which, even if allowed by law, could be harmful to the health of the animal
It was then also considered the label to identify the presence of the mandatory information that must be shown on the package (and everyone actually has it) but also optional information useful to the owners.
All things considered, the best product in the test turns out to be the Classic Prairie Poultry di Acana which is obtained a score of 81/100 and therefore has been evaluated as being of excellent quality. The Best Buy was calculated on the basis of the price per daily ration for a 10 kg dog.
But several other dog food has also been rated positively. Immediately after the first place we find, with marks equal to or higher than 70/100:
- N&D (Farmina) Ancestral grain chicken, spelled, oats and pomegranate adult medium & Maxi
- Royal Canin Medium Adult
- Hill’s science plan adult 1-6 medium con pollo
- Esselunga Bao plus croquettes with rice and chicken
- Forza 10 medium adult maintenance al pesce
- Eukanuba active adult food rich in fresh chicken
- Adoc bio medium & large breed with chicken and rice
Among the best purchases Altroconsumo reports, in addition to the aforementioned Esselunga Bao plus of excellent quality, too Top Bull (CONAD) adult dogs with chicken and rice e My friend (SELEX) Expert active croquettes with fresh chicken, both of good quality.
At the bottom of the ranking, however, evaluated as medium quality products, we find instead:
- Orlando (LIDL) croquettes with lamb and rice
- Radames (EUROSPIN) dry dog food
- Best dog active croquettes with beef
- Carrefour multi croquettes with beef
- Friskies Vitafit Balance with chicken and vegetables
