Il Biebrza National Park is on fire. A refuge for wetland birds and home to moose, the national park, one of the largest in Poland, is on fire. While wild boars, deer and many animals continue to die, the authorities launch an appeal: there is no more money to put out the fire.

Since Monday, the park's funds for firefighting have run out, unfortunately all efforts, including airplanes, to contain the fire have been in vain. On the other hand, there are droughts and the difficulty of reaching the beating heart of the fire. Along with plants and trees, moose, deer, wild boar and many birds are dying.

“We cried and worried about Australia. Today the largest Polish national park is burning, one of the best preserved bogs in Europe. It is a bird paradise. Thousands of geese, ducks, birds like kuliki stop here on spring migrations. In the marshy forests of the park there are shelters of rare woodpeckers, owls, white-tailed eagles and greater eagles - the rarest eagles in Europe, ”says Andrzej Grygoruk, director of the Biebrza National Park, asking for help.

The Biebrza National Park was a real paradise, it is no coincidence that since 1992 it has been part of the Eastern Carpathian biosphere reserve, a Unesco heritage site, together with the surrounding areas. Created in 1973, it occupies an area of which 80% are forests.

“Over 280 species of birds have been recorded here, including many rare and disappeared elsewhere, such as the snipe, the pheasant, the water grebe. This is the place where we can admire the moose, here they live free away from hunting. There are lyes, wolves, it is not possible to mention all of them ”, says the director of the park.

A natural conservation site threatened by drought. “It is a natural pearl, because 86% of all Polish peatlands were dried up in the last century. This tragic fire consumes everything, there are flames for almost 1,5 thousand hectares, that is 2 thousand football fields! And it has grown so much, ”adds Andrzej Grygoruk.

The causes of the fire remain unknown, especially as the firefighters are unable to make their way through the tall flames. The situation is tragic, yet there is a lot of general indifference. The park's funds ran out on Monday and were enough for small fires. The park authorities are asking for support and subsidies to allow air raids to fly over the area, to buy manual extinguishing silencers and fuel.
