Bisphenols and phthalates in the urine of almost half of the children analyzed: the scary Swiss study

Bisphenols and phthalates in the urine of almost half of the children analyzed: the scary Swiss study

A study that analyzed children's urine found that 47% of the urine was contaminated with bisphenols and phthalates.

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Our children are constantly in contact with various kinds of objects that may contain phthalates, bisphenols and other substances accused of being endocrine disruptors. A research conducted in Switzerland revealed the presence of different bisphenols and / or phthalates in the urine of almost half of the children sampled.

An interesting study, conducted by a specialized laboratory in Lausanne, in collaboration with the Department of Toxicology and Pharmacology of the University of Lausanne, was made public during one of the last episodes of the broadcast of the Swiss television CSR "Patti Chiari", leaving many parents baffled.

To be analyzed was the urine of 108 children between 6 months and 3 years, nearly half of which were contaminated with traces of bisphenols.

Different types of substances identified in the urine taken from the diapers of selected children, coming from 3 Swiss cantons: Vaud, Friborg and Ticino. Specifically it was 7 different bisphenols, the most frequently found were BPM (25%) and BPC (23%).

The results, which surprised the researchers themselves, are not at all comforting: 47% of the samples contained traces of bisphenols and in 7% of the cases it was bisphenol A, a dangerous substance according to the European Chemicals Agency.

Not only bisphenols, but also phthalates have been detected in the urine of the little ones. Also in this case, these are potentially dangerous substances as they are considered endocrine disruptors.

"Some have been banned, for others there are restrictions, but they are still present in children's bodies" underlines RSI.

As explained by the editors of the program:

“We detected traces, the concentrations found DON'T represent toxic doses. However, it is important to reflect in terms of the long-term effect of this exposure to endocrine disruptors ”.

The point is precisely this: we and our children are constantly exposed to these substances, present in many products in common use: from toys to any plastic object, from detergents to tin containers, from medical and dental devices to lenses for glasses. , appliances and much more.

Furthermore, as demonstrated by various studies, these substances are active, and therefore potentially dangerous, even at low concentrations.

During the transmission, the results of the tests relating to 4 children were discussed: Nora (her urine contained two phthalates and a bisphenol), her twin brother Pietro (one phthalate and 2 bisphenols including bisphenol S, the one she replaced bisphenol A but which according to experts could present similar risks), Amélie (two phthalates and one bisphenol) and Kayla, (4 phthalates and two bisphenols).

In light of these disconcerted results, the Executive Director of the European Chemicals Agency, Bjorn Hansen, who granted an interview that aired during the service.

The manager admitted that there are still too many gaps in the control of hazardous chemicals and that we cannot be sure that there is no risk. We therefore hope that, also following this study, new measures will be taken to protect children and all of us.

The study is actually still ongoing and also the results concerning the presence of phthalates are not complete, considering however that in the urine already analyzed (about half) these substances have been identified in 40% of cases!

However, this is the first research both at national and European level for the number of children tested, for the age of the children and for the number of substances sought, to which several pesticides will be added, including the infamous glyphosate.

Full results should be available at the end of the year.
