Zhuhai in southern China's Guangdong province bans the consumption of dogs and cats and other wild animals, effectively becoming the second city after Shenzhen to impose new rules that will take effect as early as May 1. they will be considered more cattle but pets.

The news was reported by the state TV, China News. Yong Ling, an official of the Standing Committee of the Zhuhai Municipal People's Congress, read the new regulation at a press conference.
Eating cats and dogs will result in a fine of up to 20 to 30 times the market value of these animals.

Consumption it will be strictly prohibited in the restaurants, hotels and farms of the city, but also across all online platforms. As we know, it was Shenzhen that led the way, and here too the ban will start from 1 May 2020.

These new regulations, probably children of the coronavirus emergency, not only protect animals, but also guarantee greater protection in terms of food safety and human welfare. Not only that, another step forward is the fact that for the first time the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs declares that dogs are pets and no longer regarded as cattle.

As we have repeatedly said, part of the science believes that the novel coronavirus was transmitted to humans by wild animals sold as food at a market in Wuhan, a city of 11 million people in central China. But the SARS outbreak in 2002 and 2003 has also been linked to the consumption of wild animals.

According to the Independent, it is estimated that 10 million dogs a year are killed for the meat trade in China, but for Humane Society International, only 20% 20% of the population still have this culinary taste. A national survey conducted in 2016 suggested that a majority of Chinese citizens believe the dog meat trade should be completely banned.

"After the Shenzhen ban and the government's historic declaration classifying dogs as pets, we hope this is the beginning of a domino effect of progressive legislation across China," said Wendy Higgins, spokesperson for Humane Society International.
