Why you should have your dog spayed

There are many advantages of sterilization. This surgery in fact:

  • eliminates the risk of unwanted pregnancies and litters,
  • eliminates the risk of hysterical pregnancies or fake pregnancies for females who suffer not only physically, but also psychologically,
  • attenuates behaviors related to sexuality such as contrasts between similars to predominate, marking the territory or in part aggression,
  • reduces the risks of breast and ovarian cancers, uterine diseases, as well as cysts and testicular cancer,
  • makes your dog live longer as neutered pets have been shown to live longer,
  • allows you to keep under control the phenomenon of straying which is caused, in addition to the ignoble abandonment, by the proliferation of non-sterilized animals that mate with each other, churning out puppies after puppies.

Myths about spaying a dog

Although the dog tends to calm down after neutering and put aside competitiveness, sterilization does not necessarily solve his behavioral problems such as aggression or anxiety. This may be because the dog will be calmer no longer having that recurring sexual urge, but that's not always the case. Behind behaviors such as aggression, something else is hidden. This must be studied in depth with an educator because it cannot completely disappear, at least, with surgery.

Another myth to dispel is the dog's tendency to gain weight after being operated on. This is a halfway myth since on the one hand it is true that the dog's appetite increases, but on the other hand it is up to the owner to keep him at bay and not to give his animal food in industrial quantities just because he sees it hungry. Your vet will be able to advise you on how much and what to feed your dog so that he can follow a suitable diet and not gain extra weight.

When to spay the dog

First of all it is appropriate to make a distinction between male and female dogs, but not only. In identifying the best time for surgery, we must also take into account the size of our dog.

Many vets suggest that operate on the male before he reaches complete sexual maturity. The question arises spontaneously how to understand if our dog is "mature" from this point of view. There are some new behaviors that usually arise between 6 and 8 months that make you understand that the animal has developed a sexual instinct and is ready to mate, which you shouldn't think about if you choose castration. These are for example raising the thigh in peeing, marking the territory and starting to mount his fellow men and also humans. Beware of legs and cushions which for many dogs are objects of desire.

Much depends, however, on the breed, its genetic predisposition and its stature as usually small dogs reach sexual maturity earlier than medium or large dogs.

Even for females, veterinarians agree on waiting for the achievement of sexual maturity which, unlike males, is easily visible due to the blood loss that the dog has and which generally occurs in the first year of the animal's life. It is therefore good to wait for the first heat and sterilize the dog a about two months after the end of menstruation. Here too, size and breed have a certain weight, in some dogs the menstruation can occur around 6 months, in others around 12.

In any case, the rule should apply to both neutering and neutering: the younger the animal, the lower the risk of cancer and disease.

How much does it cost to sterilize the dog

The costs for dog sterilization are variable as they depend on many factors such as the type of operation, anesthesia, the size of the dog and the city where you reside.

However, the price for females starts from 150-200 euros, but most of the time it is around 350 euros if we also consider the analyzes to be done and that the operation is more complex. Sometimes veterinarians not only remove the female's ovaries, but also the uterus if it is altered and the cost of the surgery clearly varies. For males, the operation is almost always faster, so its cost is 100-200 euros.

What to do before and after spaying your dog

Being an operation, it is very important that for at least 12 hours before, the dog is not given any food. There are veterinarians who also advise not to let the animal drink, so remove the bowls and check the dog in the hours preceding sterilization.

When your dog wakes up from anesthesia:

  • wrap it in a blanket, in a plaid or in a soft towel as it will be cold and place it in its hygienic carrier;
  • choose a quiet spot in the house where to lay his kennel and where he cannot be disturbed by other animals, he still needs tranquility;
  • arrange toilet mats and take your dog out more regularly if you find he needs them. Urinary incontinence occurs in 20% of spayed dogs within 3 years of the operation;
  • wear an Elizabethan collar, preferably soft, so that your dog will not be able to get to the points, but still lie down comfortably;
  • check your wounds regularly for healing and contact your vet if you notice anything unusual.

And remember, neutering is not only a gesture of love towards your dog, allowing him to live better and healthier, but also towards all his fellow creatures born from unwanted mating.
