The tricks to follow for planting bulbs out of season

Tulips: maybe you don't know it but you can plant the bulbs even now to make them bloom in spring

As we have already said, the period from October to December it is the ideal time to plant tulip bulbs, so that they begin to grow their roots before entering their winter dormancy and then flower when the milder temperatures of spring arrive.

However, you can also grow tulips out of season, but you will have to imitate the conditions that the bulbs go through during the winter and you must also have not too many expectations, because your flowers will bloom later than normal.

Plant the bulbs in late winter

In those regions where milder temperatures begin to arrive during the month of February, you can get away with it planting tulip bulbs at the end of January. However, you will have to try to reproduce the winter frost artificially, just put the bulbs inside a paper bag and place them in the vegetable compartment of your refrigerator for 6 12-weeks and then they can be planted in the ground. But remember that the plants will bloom later than normal.

Plant the bulbs in early spring

You can try the same artificial refrigerator cold trick for planting bulbs during early spring as well. But since artificial cooling is by no means comparable to that offered by nature, the replacement method may not work. But if the process works, expect flowering during the summer, much later than normal.

Plant the bulbs in pots during late winter or early spring

Instead of planting the bulbs directly in the ground, you can plant them in pots using normal soil. Plant the bulbs about 3 cm deep, then put the plant in the refrigerator, covering it with a plastic bag to prevent the soil from drying out. Once the bulb begins to sprout, remove the plastic and water often the plant so that the soil remains moist. They will have to pass approx three months before you can expose the plant to sunlight, then let it rest indoors in a shaded area. You can plant it during the late spring.

Other practical tips

  • The soil where to grow tulips must be sandy but also rich in nutrients. You can then use universal soil for green plants, natural compost and a part of river sand which ensures proper drainage which will prevent the bulb from rotting.
  • Tulips love the sun but hate drafts, so pick one sunny but at the same time sheltered position.
  • The bulbs must be buried with the point pointing up (where the sprout will develop) and the flat side facing down (where the roots will be born).
  • If placed in the flowerbed, we will have to space them 10 cm from each other to allow the plant to develop in the best way.
