The idea was born of Jason Aramburu, a scholar of the soils that he had previously dealt with founding Re:Char, an association to help farmers in Kenya thanks to new technologies. The Edyn Garden project was launched on Kickstarter and in a short time it is achieving the hoped-for success.
Edyn Garden measures humidity, light, temperature and soil conditions with great precision and allows you to remotely monitor the state of the crops. A special sensor, to be inserted into the soil, collects and analyzes data relating to changes in climate and soil conditions.
Then just consult Edyn App to have all the information necessary to take better care of the plants, for example, regarding watering. An add-on, Edyn Water Valve, uses the data collected by the sensor to monitor the irrigation system. In this way, the garden receives water only when it really needs it.
For its functioning, Edyn Garden uses thesolar power, thanks to a special panel applied above the instrument. The device includes four sensors in all and was designed by designer Yves Behar, who is also an inventor.
Edyn Garden works thanks to the connection with a Wi-Fi network, but a version to be connected to the mobile phone is already being planned. The system locates our position e suggests the most suitable plants to grow depending on the soil conditions, what others grow in the surroundings and the climatic conditions.
At this point just select the plants or vegetables to grow and Edyn Garden will warn you when water or fertilizer is needed. The purchase of Edyn Garden makes it possible to support the activities of Slow Food International and the same device will be the protagonist of interventions to improve agriculture in Africa. Edyn Garden is likely to be produced on a large scale by December and it is available for shipment from March 2015. At the moment it can pre-order on Kickstarter for $ 99.
