The weeks between September and October are busy periods of work and preparation for those who own a garden. Like spring, you need to prepare the soil and plants to best overcome a season whose temperatures put a strain on nature. Especially if the night ones go below zero. Here are some practical tips to prepare for winter.

Sand the ground
Contrary to what one might think, it is not a practice recommended only for farmers. Even those who own a garden should prepare the ground in this way. Airing it means moving it, making it lighter and more draining and avoiding the excessive proliferation of molds. It also allows the roots to breathe and absorb rainwater.
You can easily do this with a fork or in any case with a tool that pierces the earth and moves it at regular intervals of space. Furthermore, the same tool can be used to remove tufts of dry grass or dead twigs. In short, all that excess organic material that would "suffocate" the garden. At first glance, the lawn may look a bit bare, but this hulling operation will allow for more lush growth of the grass in spring.
Reap the rewards
Anyone who has planted fruit trees knows that even in this period there is a harvest: that of apples. It is important to do it right. You have to make sure that the fruit has reached the exact point of ripeness and this occurs by touching it and trying to rotate it slightly. If the petiole comes off easily without having to pull, then the right time has come. The apple is ripe and ready to be enjoyed. When untouched and carefully picked, these fruits can be stored for months.

This is also true. Contrary to what one might believe, there are qualities of tomatoes that ripen better and become tastier with the September sun. The irradiation of light in this period is less strong, it does not stress the plant and the fruit therefore reaches its point of ripeness with longer times but still ensuring an intense and sweet flavor.
Time to plant the bulbs in pots
It is the ideal period to bury the bulbs, preferably in pots if we are in an area where winters are harsh. Let's choose it in terracotta and place it in a sheltered area of the garden. If necessary, it can be moved comfortably. By doing so in spring we will be able to enjoy many beautiful colored flowers.
Pruning
As with lawns, plants also need a good pruning in order to be more luxuriant and generous with flowers, leaves and fruits in spring. They are allowed to go into vegetative rest without having to spend the precious energy to keep the lymph all over the system. So if we have raspberry plants, for example, it is time to cut the oldest stems down to the base and leave only the new and green ones.
Working in the garden in this period is even more beautiful due to the milder temperatures and the less intense light that gives the landscape a greater charm.
