The neighbour's grass isn't always greener: the dark, hidden side of perfect lawns

The neighbour's grass isn't always greener: the dark, hidden side of perfect lawns

The perfect lawn isn't what you always thought. No to herbicides, gasoline and water consumption, yes to biodiversity

They are all the same. Perfectly shorn. Continuously irrigated. Without even the shadow of a leaf or a flower out of place. There are so many gardens like this in today's homes. So flawless that they don't seem real. And woe betide if a weed appears, it must be eliminated instantly. But are we sure they are really green?

Alberto Mario DeLogu also asked this, publishing a post on facebook that went viral. “My neighbor, like the whole neighborhood, mows the lawn every Saturday”, writes Alberto, “It costs him 2 liters of petrol, a few ounces of selective herbicide and mineral fertilizer and throws the cut grass into the organic bin. "

And he continues, “My neighbor has to water every evening because otherwise his beautiful green lawn turns yellow in an amen. I've never given it a drop of water, but that never turns yellow. "

Not to mention the insects and small animals, irresistibly attracted to Alberto's green oasis, where nature takes its course without too many "straightenings".

“From May to August I fed several thousand pollinating insects of all kinds. I host a beautiful colony of Asclepias, the latex plant, and I am part of the “milkweed way”, the North American airway of monarch butterflies, which live on their nectar. Every day I get the pit stop of at least a couple of these majestic insects. From dusk to dawn I know that among the leaves of the burdock there is an intense nightlife: frogs, lizards, mice, squirrels, marmots, moles, possums, skunks, raccoons and cats. I hear the verses, the noises and the smells. "

Which obviously does not happen in the neighbor's garden. On the other hand, pets are often not welcome in impeccable meadows.

La Lawn fashion, the classic uniform turf that so much resembles a golf course, and that goes crazy in Canada and the USA, where it occupies about 25 million hectares, and is also trendy in our latitudes, is the cultivation, explains Alberto, "that takes up more space in all of North America . And it doesn't feed a single living being. "

To keep these lawns impeccable, “3 billion liters of gasoline are consumed every year. Three million cubic meters. One thousand and two hundred Olympic swimming pools. Which produce seven million tons of CO2. "

A high cost perfection, not only in economic terms, but also in environmental terms.

Alberto, who in his neighborhood is "the strange one" concludes his reflection as follows:

"Is it clear now why saving yourself will be so damn difficult, maybe impossible?"

The lawn-golf course will also be impeccable (much less beautiful), but is it really worth it? Maybe it's time to think about it!
