A stretch of coast about 18 kilometers long was covered with snow spheres, some as big as a tennis ball, others with a diameter of 1 meter. It is the result of a rare environmental process in which various pieces of ice become real spheres by the action of wind and water.

The villagers of Nyda, located on the Yamal Peninsula near the Arctic Circle, they had never seen anything like it.

According to experts, the phenomenon is linked to the combined action of winds and water, the temperature of the environment and the presence of ice on the coast. A similar phenomenon has already occurred in Finland in December 2014 and in Michigan as of December 2015.

According to the inhabitants of the area, the snowballs began to form in October when the water began to reach the beach, which in a short time, due to the lowering of temperatures, was covered with ice.
This year Siberia is hitting a real record in terms of cold and low temperatures. Snow cover has reached its highest level for this time of year since 1998.
