The Biodiversity Trends Explorer reveals how global biodiversity has fallen dangerously below the safe limit

The Biodiversity Trends Explorer reveals how global biodiversity has fallen dangerously below the safe limit

The overall integrity of the planet's biodiversity is estimated at 75%, a percentage much lower than the safety limit, set at 90%

The overall integrity of the biodiversity of the Planet has fallen below the safety limit set at 90%. Today is estimated at 75% and this exposes us to the risk of an ecological recession that could lead to widespread famines around the world.

La cause main of this decline is to be found in the loss of habitat, in turn caused by the expansion of human activities, including agriculture.

To say this is a report from the Natural History Museum in London which, in view of COP 15, launched the Biodiversity Trends Explorer, an online tool that allows you to monitor the health of various species around the world.

In Britain, where the project was born, has gone from the Industrial Revolution to today almost half of biodiversity has been lost and dozens of species are on the verge of extinction. Among these, the Scottish wild cat, the turtle dove, the marten, the magnet toad, the cicadas and hedgehogs. The decline, in addition to animals, also affects plants, fungi and microorganisms present in the soil.

The data is worrying because biodiversity is responsible for producing everything we consume. If we have different varieties of apples, tomatoes and other vegetables available, it is thanks to biodiversity. A reduction in it could therefore mean witnessing a significant one decrease of available foods, for quality but also for quantity.

The work was published on the eve of the United Nations conference on biodiversity where objectives will be set to protect the natural habitats and the species that live there. The data was released precisely to help such negotiations and call on governments around the world to take ambitious action to preserve and improve biodiversity globally.

Biodiversity loss is as catastrophic as climate change, but the solutions are linked. Stopping further damage to the planet requires major change, but we can do it if we act now, together. What we are doing is not enough to stop, let alone reverse, this devastating decline in biodiversity. Governments have the economic, political and legal power to address the planetary emergency, and there may still be time, but they must act now - said Professor Andy Purvis, one of the report's authors.
