In summer but also in winter, especially if we go skiing, it is very important to use a sunscreen that protects us at best. Often, however, as a study has shown, we tend to forget to spread the protection correctly on a particular area of the face, exposing ourselves to some risks.

As several scientific studies have shown, some areas of the face are particularly prone to skin cancer and it is therefore more important than ever to apply sunscreen correctly when needed.

But, according to a study published by a team from the Department of Eye & Vision Science at the University of Liverpool, people who expose themselves to the sun may not take care of their face and eyes as they should, with potentially harmful effects.

The research, conducted a few years ago but still providing valuable advice, asked participants to apply sunscreen to their faces. Before and after some photos were taken with a UV sensitive camera, these show the areas covered with sunscreen appearing black.

You can see very well which are the areas where the sunscreen has not been put on correctly.

The analysis showed that on average people forget to put the cream on about 9,5% of their faces and areas that are not properly protected are mainly the eyelids and the area between the inner corner of the eye and the nose.

Even when specific information was provided on skin cancers that appear in the eyelid area, 7,7% of the participants' faces were still not properly protected.

And given that over 90% of basal cell carcinomas occur on the head or neck and 5-10% of all skin cancers occur on the eyelids, this is worrying news.

So let's not forget to spread the sunscreen correctly, trying to cover the area around the eyes as much as possible and, if possible, wear sunglasses.

Also be careful to always consider the protective factor indicated on the label to be reliable, unfortunately some recent investigations have shown that sun creams do not in all cases keep what they promise regarding the sun protection factor (SPF).
