The cause of hair loss is DMDM hydantoin, a preservative that releases formaldehyde and damages hair follicles.

A consumer group has started one class action contro Johnson & Johnson, accusing the company of using a preservative that causes hair loss.

Il preservative in question is DMDM hydantoin, used in small quantities to prevent the proliferation of bacteria and fungi. The ingredient is present in the formulation of numerous OGX® shampoos, conditioners and hair care oils, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson.

To work as a preservative, the DMDM hydantoin releases slowly formaldehyde, a molecule of concern as excessive exposure to this substance is linked to skin rashes, eye irritation, allergies and other ailments or diseases, including cancer.

Johnson & Johnson announced as early as 2012 that it plans to remove DMDM hydantoin from its products by 2015 as the ingredient does not meet the company's safety standards. In fact, Johnson & Johnson itself claims that the preservative is still used in some products, when the use of other preservatives is incompatible with the ingredients of the cosmetic.

“Johnson & Johnson has made a number of false claims that its products deeply nourish, gently cleanse and repair hair. However, the formula of the products contains an ingredient, or a combination of ingredients, that have caused thousands of consumers to lose their hair and / or irritate their scalp ", reads the lawsuit brought by Larissa Whipple, a citizen of the 'Illinois.

Johnson & Johnson defended itself by claiming to carefully select ingredients to formulate products and subject cosmetics to rigorous testing. The formulas of OGX® shampoos and conditioners have been steadily improving, according to the company, and no new products have been launched with DMDM hydantoin in recent years.

However, it should be noted that Johnson & Johnson is not the only company to use this preservative, which is found in many hair care products. According to some dermatologists, formaldehyde can irritate the scalp and interfere with the functioning of the hair follicles, leading to hair loss.

Il risk of losing hair using shampoo and conditioner, however, would be decidedly low, considering the small quantities in which the substance is present in cosmetics.
