Salazar Slytherin, scientists discover a new species of viper and take inspiration from Harry Potter to name it

A team of Indian researchers discovers a new species of green viper and names it after one of the Harry Potter characters

The discovery is real and was made by a team of Indian researchers even if the name chosen for the new species of green viper is inspired by Salazar Slytherin, one of the four founders of Hogwarts, the school of witchcraft and wizardry in which it is set. JK Rowling's Harry Potter literary saga. A choice probably due to the fact that the magician in question loved reptiles and was even able to talk to them.

The finding was published in the trade journal Zoosystematics and Evolution. The new species, known precisely as Trimeresurus Salazar, was found by researchers in India and is distinguished from others of the genus Trimeresurus, widespread mainly in South-Western Asia, due to the reddish stripe on the head and a large number of teeth. They are very poisonous vipers found in Arunachal Pradesh, a state located in north-eastern India, during an expedition carried out between 25 June 2019 and 5 August 2019. In general, however, in addition to Trimeresurus Salazar, in India there are at least others 15 similar species. Overall, there are 48 worldwide.

When they spotted the viper in the area rich in biodiversity, the researchers immediately noticed that it was a different specimen from those already known due to the coloration. The bright green on the side of the head and on the body of the males has a red streak. After comparing the vipers with 11 other specimens present within a nature reserve, they confirmed that they are facing a new species, which in the end they sympathetically linked to the Harry Potter saga.
