Sa Tanca Manna, the millennial olive tree destroyed by fires in Sardinia, could be saved

Apparently life still beats in the heart of Sa Tanca Manna, as confirmed by the Sardinian botanist Gianluigi Bacchetta

His blackened body is a punch to the stomach. What remains of him are burnt branches, ash and little else. But perhaps Cuglieri's millennial olive tree, destroyed by the terrible fires that hit Sardinia, will be able to survive.

The last word has not yet been said but if until yesterday the majestic millennial olive tree seemed doomed, today there is some hope that it can make it, that Nature can flourish again where man has sown rubble.

For Sa Tanca Manna, the wild olive tree, there is still some faint hope. With its shaft with a diameter of about 10 meters and a height of 16 and a half meters, this imposing creature was the symbol of the area but yesterday it was crushed by the flames.

After the intervention of the firefighters, the Sardinian engineer Ignazio Camarda who led the rescue operation explained:

The wild olive of Tanca Manna no longer exists. Its mighty trunk is hidden by the very large foliage ruined on the ground with its thousand branches, the trunks continue to burn, it sinks into the layer of very hot ash, the stump still burns with a lively flame, it is impossible to do something. A small basal part of the trunk appears less compromised.

We went to Cuglieri early this morning with Graziano. An existential unease takes you as you go into it ...

During the inspection, the jet is concentrated in a part that could still be vital:

The worst would be that the stump continues to burn from a few pieces of root still alive underground. A new sucker would allow to keep the memory of one of the most beautiful and oldest trees in Sardinia, he concludes.

I consider it appropriate to post the fire extinguishing intervention with special thanks to the firefighters.

And apparently life still beats in the heart of Sa Tanca Manna, as confirmed by the Sardinian botanist Gianluigi Bacchetta, according to whom

The patriarch will manage to survive. He will remain mutilated and reduced to a minimum, but the left side seems vital and the providential intervention of the firefighters has had an effect. The trunk and roots no longer burn and now we must continue to wet the rhizosphere to lower the temperatures of the soil, then we'll see. See you Wednesday morning to check together if these first treatments actually had the desired effect: blocking the internal combustion of the trunk and roots, lowering the temperature of the soil and consequently of the rhizosphere. Strength, courage and resilience.
