In Holland a specimen of Amorphophallus decus-silvae, a species known as "penis plant".

It is a rare species and originally from Indonesia, not easy to grow, present in the collection of a few botanical gardens in Europe and in the world. His flowering it is an exceptional event: in Europe it has occurred only three times, the last in 1997.

This year, after twenty-four years, Dutch botanical garden staff noticed a small bud in September. It was the first time that this six-year-old penis plant had developed a flower.

In just over a month, the bud has grown to half a meter in height, carried by a stem about two meters. A few days ago the bud opened showing all its splendor and the garden was visited by numerous visitors who were able to witness a historic moment. The flower soon began to spread an incredible odor rotten, similar to that emanating from the flowers of the corpse plant, Amorphophallus titanum.

A smell that is certainly unpleasant to us human beings but which attracts many pollinators, especially flies. Since there are no other specimens of the corpse flower in the garden, during the two days of flowering, the staff worked to collect the pollen and send it to other botanical gardens so they could reproduce these rare plants.
