A large branch of a ficus in Piazza Marina in Palermo fell on the railing of the Villa Garibaldi. Fortunately, the detachment did not cause damage to people or things, but the tree in question is inserted among the monumental ones and belongs to the Ficus macrophylla species, with a height of more than thirty meters and a circumference that exceeds twenty. Indeed, it is thelargest tree in Europe and is located in the garden designed by the architect Filippo Basile.
“It is a phenomenon known to monumental ficus specialists all over the world. It is called 'summer branch drop'. It is probably linked to water imbalances caused by sudden changes in temperature and humidity, even if no study has well identified the causes and possible preventive symptoms ”, declares the councilor Sergio Marino in a press release published on the website of the Municipality of Palermo.

“It had already happened a few years ago in a ficus placed in front of the Fair, at the entrance to the Favorita. Precisely fearing this, the interventions on the tree in Piazza Marina carried out last year aimed at favoring the stability of the lateral branches of the tree, helping the aerial roots to anchor to the ground (some new circles were created ad hoc in the soil) and supporting the branches ”, he glosses.
