Observing them was an international group of scientists, who filmed their behavior off the Australian coast.
“We have seen frequent interactions, reports, mating, defenses, evictions of octopuses from their burrows and attempts to keep any predators away. These observations demonstrate that high-density occupation and complex social behaviors are not unique to the site that has been affected to some extent by human activity. The behavior confirms that complex social interactions are more common among octopuses than previously recognized " explain researchers.
The shell settlement is the second of its kind. In the 10-hour video recordings of the site, scientists counted up to 16 of the octopuses present, a significant figure for an animal believed to be solitary.
Professor David Scheel, one of the authors of the study published in the journal Marine and Freshwater Behavior and Physiology, has been studying the behavior of cephalopods since 2009 when the first "city", nicknamed Octopolis.
Even if the animals live in the same area, they are not always sociable with each other. Scientists have noticed some behaviors and movements that hinted at situations of defense, of threat.
"We have many questions and we are accumulating video recordings of behaviors that will allow us to find the answers", he said shell.
