Mulching: a new way to mow and fertilize the lawn

Those who have a garden, even a small one, know that it is good to cut the lawn periodically, in order to keep the grass compact and well developed.

The plants that make up the turf tend to stretch excessively if not cut regularly. Having a ride-on mower available allows you to cut these plants, to favor their development horizontally, preventing the lawn from appearing untidy and also to limit the development of weeds. But managing grass clippings can be complex, even if you have a compost bin available. Today, however, there is a new way to mow the lawn, called mulching.

What is mulching

It is a simple solution to a widespread problem, especially among those who have or manage large lawns, which need to be cut with lawn tractors. The new generation lawn tractors are able to cut the turf by grinding the grass obtained, and then letting it fall back on the ground, among the small plants that cover the lawn. In this way the plant material decomposes quickly, becoming a good nitrogen fertilizer for the soil.

To be able to mulch it is necessary to have specially designed lawn tractors or lawn mowers available. In fact, these not only cut the grass but also chop it up, in order to make decomposition faster. In fact, leaving a cut of a traditional lawnmower on the ground can lead to an uneven and very slow decomposition, which often causes the death of the grass seedlings present on the ground.
Choose the ride-on mower

The choice of lawn mower tractor to be used, therefore, also considering the possibility of mulching. The effect of this technique is particularly useful when mowing the lawn regularly, in order to leave a correct amount of chopped grass on the ground, suitable for quickly creating decomposed organic substance and useful as fertilizer material. Clearly, the wider the land to mow, the greater advantages are obtained with this new system.

First of all because it avoids the mowers having to spend many hours to collect the grass; or in any case avoid being forced to dispose of the material collected by the tractor or lawn mower. Apart from this favors a more eco-sustainable lawn development, without the need to use abundant chemical fertilizers. In practice, the organic substance taken up during the development of the grass seedlings is returned to the soil.

The advantages of mulching

If you have tried to mow a lawn, even a modest one, you know that cutting is only the first operation to be carried out. Afterwards you need to take care of the freshly cut grass. A part can be used to create compost, but large quantities of fresh grass placed in the same composter are not an ideal solution. The heat released during the decomposition of only grass piled up in a small space does not make the result suitable for use as humus. Those who do not have a composter, or have large lawns, are therefore forced to give all the grass that they cannot use in any other way to the local landfill.

With mulching, on the other hand, the entire mowing result is left on the ground, because the new generation tractors are able to prepare it for rapid decomposition. In this way, an excellent soil conditioner material is obtained, which offers the soil a good structure and large quantities of nitrogen, a substance suitable for making the leaves greener and well developed.
