Last week, in North Rhine Westphalia, a honey-colored Golden Retriever mum gave birth to a litter in which all the babies have regained their characteristic colors, except one that appeared greenish, Mojito.
The owner obviously did not expect such a puppy and after a first moment of amazement and concern she inquired as to why it could have such a color and if it could indicate a puppy's health problem.
Indeed Mojito looks great. E so why is it green?
Owner Joanna Justice asked experts and got to know a rare condition due to the presence of biliverdin, a greenish bile pigment found in the liver and urine but which, in this puppy's case, also contaminated the placenta.
Basically the biliverdin has "stained" the coat of the dog since it has gone to mix with the amniotic fluid that, inside the uterus, surrounded the puppy.
A rare but momentary event. Once the hair grows, in fact, it will slowly return to normal and the little Mojito will become honey-colored just like his brothers!
