Is this Miele dishwasher with the “world's first automatic dosing system” just an expensive gimmick?

The consumer magazine Which? he tested the PowerDisks and found that they are as effective as the more classic tabs but much more expensive

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Is the PowerDisk of the new Miele G7 dishwasher line, that is the device that automatically releases the detergent during washing, really an advantageous choice or is it just a gimmick that doesn't actually save money? The question is the UK consumer magazine, Which ?.

Which? wanted to test one of the Miele dishwashers equipped with PowerDisk, to find out if having this device is really an advantage for consumers. The G7 Miele line is the one that uses the innovative disc, the "first automatic dosing system in the world”Which fits directly into the dishwasher door and, depending on the selected program, releases the right amount of detergent at the most suitable time. Each disc should last 20 washes.

All this at first glance seems convenient as well as comfortable but in reality, testing the operation of the dishwasher, Which? instead he believes it is a more expensive system (almost three times the price of normal capsules) and not so practical.

Specifically, experts from the UK magazine tested the Miele G7110 SC dishwasher using both PowerDisk cleaner and Fairy Platinum Plus tablets. What did they find? Both solutions cleaned equally but, considering PowerDisks cost nearly three times as much, there really isn't much to justify switching to this solution.

The test also questioned whether Miele PowerDisks were easier to use than standard dishwasher tablets, plus the discs were also subjected to endurance tests to see how long they really last.

What the manufacturer said turned out to be true, that is, the disc lasted exactly 20 washes but as far as ease of use is concerned, including inserting a new disc and removing it once finished, the experts were skeptical. In fact, to be assembled, they must be aligned and inserted perfectly. The conclusion is that “then, all things considered, discs don't make your life easier“.

Costs

How much do different dishwasher detergent solutions really cost? In the following infographic it is shown very clearly.

@which?

Considering the cost for each wash, the PowerDisk is much more expensive (50 cents compared to 0,19 cents for Fairy Platinum Plus and even 8 cents for Aldi capsules).

It must be said, however, that the Miele PowerDisks also include salt and rinse aid in the same way as the all-in-one tablets, which means that they do not need to be refilled and the cost of the disc is therefore the total of everything needed by the dishwasher.

Furthermore, an advantage of the PowerDisks is that you can turn on the dishwasher remotely, unlike the capsules that require presence to be able to insert them. You can also set an automatic start program, so that the machine turns on every day at a predetermined time.

Miele also assured that PowerDisks are recyclable, a plus for this device, considering that many of the coverings of the dishwasher tabs are made of plastic or in any case are not widely recyclable.

Despite these advantages, Which? is the following:

They don't clean better, they are more difficult to use and they cost a lot more. So there's really no good reason to use Miele's PowerDisk feature.
