The return of the soap: friend of the environment, it beats liquid soap

Less polluting and with less waste production than detergent bottles. Soap bars are making a strong comeback in the hearts of consumers all over the world.

If until the 50s the soap was almost a luxury, in recent years it has been abandoned, overtaken by alternatives perhaps considered more practical but certainly less ecological.

The various hand and face cleansers fill entire supermarket shelves with their plastic bottles. Being products of frequent and daily use, once emptied they end up increasing the amount of plastic waste.

Recently, Europe introduced a ban on the use of single-use plastics starting from 2021, which however does not apply to this kind of products. Yet, a new sensitivity is emerging more and more and the soap is returning to occupy our sinks.

The myth that they were rich in germs and dirt has been dispelled. There is not much difference between soap and dispenser since the bottle is repeatedly touched with dirty hands to release the liquid.

A return to childhood ...

“One of the reasons why soap is making a comeback is that people prefer something that refers to the concept of nature ", explains Mariacristina Martinengo, professor of consumer behavior at the School of Management and Economics of the University of Turin. "Furthermore, the image of traditional soap brings us back to our childhood and to the past that we all more or less unconsciously miss and that we believe to be better because it is more genuine".

But soap returns to be loved because it is practical even when traveling and liquid soaps are less comfortable to put in the beauty case.

… And an eye on sustainability

“From the point of view of the sociology of consumption, another aspect that pushes us to prefer solid soap to liquid soap today is its greater sustainability because it has no plastic packaging and the consumer likes to use an environmentally friendly product” continues Martinengo.

Of course, not all soaps are created equal. Also in this case it is necessary to know how to choose those that have the best ingredients and a good INCI. Generally speaking, fewer ingredients are often positive in themselves.

How to self-produce soap

Certainly the most ecological solution is to self-produce your own soap starting from simple ingredients. How suggests our Francesca Piccoletti in her blog, different fats can be used, even the recovered and filtered frying oil. While you can add essential oils or herbs to decorate your homemade soap, it only takes 3 ingredients to make it: water, olive oil, and caustic soda.

Get to work and if you haven't already, say goodbye to the polluting dispensers!
