Keeping the kitchen clean is important and with a certain regularity we must also make sure to wash the hood and the filter so that it guarantees maximum efficiency and safety.

The hood is an important element of our kitchen, the circulation fan, the filter and the exhaust ducts allow us to better extract the fumes that come from the food we are preparing. It is therefore important to use it but also essential to keep it clean so that it works at its best.

But how often should it be cleaned?

How often to clean the kitchen hood

Anyone who cooks on a daily basis should clean the inside and outside of the hood and the filter once a month. If the kitchen is used less, seasonal cleaning will suffice.

In any case, we can understand that it is time to clean the hood if:

  • The hood does not eliminate the smoke from the room even at maximum power. This could mean that the filter or ducts are clogged with grease and need cleaning or that the motor is causing the fan to malfunction.
  • The engine is very noisy or hums. Loud or unusual sounds indicate that the engine is working too hard. It may only need to be cleaned but in some cases it will need to be replaced.

Among other things, there is a very important safety aspect: cleaning the hood is essential not only to improve its appearance and efficiency but also to prevent possible fires in the house. In fact, when a pot or pan is left on the stove for too long, the flames can rise and reach the hood which, if greased, can favor its spread.

How to clean the hood

Kitchen hoods can be made with different types of metal, from stainless steel to bronze to copper. and more But in all cases we can use the following ingredients for cleaning:

  • Sodium bicarbonate
  • Degreasing dish detergent
  • Boiling water

Just fill a sink or large pot with boiling water, add a tablespoon or two of degreasing dish soap to the water and half a cup of baking soda while mixing well.

Release and remove the filter to immerse it in the solution, leaving it to soak for at least fifteen minutes.

The best tool for cleaning the hood is a brush with soft nylon silks. This will help remove grease or food particles that are still attached to the filter. Rinse well with hot water and dry completely before putting the filter back into the hood.
