After years of debate in the academic and non-academic fields, a study conducted by the English research institute John Innes Center, in collaboration with Cornell University, the University of California, Berkley and the University of Edinburg, has finally solved the mystery. on regenerative abilities freshly cut grass.
The team of foreign researchers overturned the key concepts of 19th-century botany and the classification of grasses that were considered to be like the petioles of the so-called eudicotyledonous plants, but which actually belong to the group of monocotiledoni and derive almost entirely from the petioles.
The study was carried out by applying the theories of developmental genetics to the latest generation computational models that allowed the researchers to observe the regenerative process that occurs in grass through a tubular-shaped structure called sheath. This process also affects other grasses such as corn, wheat and rice since these plants have the same type of leaf and also have a sheath.
It is precisely the sheath that allows the grass, and therefore the grasses in general, to regenerate at the moment of cutting. The genes contained within it perform a double function: on the one hand they protect the plant from external agents and traumas such as tears or incisions, on the other they allow it to reproduce when it is cut, growing in height and thus making it regenerate.
The study therefore highlights the need for further investigations on the subject and to review the knowledge that so far exists in the world of botany to reveal new fascinating mysteries.
