Glyphosate also in food for dogs and cats. To say it are the researchers of the Cornell University of Ithaca who, in a new study, published in Environmental Pollution, have analyzed some brands of food for Fido and Fuffi and found inside the best-selling Monsanto Roundup pesticide in the world.

Glyphosate is now everywhere: in pasta, in beer, even in our children's diapers and now we discover, through urine, that even our four-legged friends are not immune.

The researchers did examine 18 varieties of cat and dog food e traces of glyphosate were found in all. According to data from the team led by Anthony Hay, the values ranged from 80 to 2 thousand micrograms of glyphosate per kilogram. The 18 foods were all mixtures of vegetable and meat ingredients, while one product was certified GMO-free.

“It's hard to find a product that doesn't contain glyphosate, even in puppy food,” says Anthony Hay, professor of microbiology.

The measured values however lower than the limits for a man.

“If a human were to eat this food every day, the amount of glyphosate would still be below current safe levels. While there appears to be no immediate risk, there is still uncertainty about the chronic consequences of low doses, ”explains Hay.

How did glyphosate get into pet food? Probably through the vegetables and cereals that are contained in the product, in fact the more fiber a feed contained, the higher the glyphosate.

The results therefore show that the herbicide residues come from plant material. Glyphosate, as we know, has been classified as "probably carcinogenic" by the World Health Organization (WHO).

There is currently not enough data on pets, the team estimated that the average exposure of a dog or cat to glyphosate would be 0,7%.

What should a cat or dog owner know?

“There is probably no immediate risk, but on a chronic level it is yet to be evaluated. It's hard to find a product that doesn't contain glyphosate, ”Hay says.

The researchers will now move on to step two, that of figuring out if these glyphosate levels affect the health of our four-legged friends.
