The highest waterfalls in the world have been discovered close to Denmark, but they are underwater.

There, under the Strait of Denmark, which separates Iceland and Greenland, the highest waterfalls in the world recently discovered by oceanographers are thrown silently into immense gorges hidden from view and under the ocean.

In fact, although underwater, it is the tallest waterfall in the world, with water tumbling nearly 3.505 meters, more than three times the height of Earth's tallest waterfall, Angel Falls.

The most famous underwater waterfalls are certainly those present in Mauritius, but how are they formed? When the colder and denser water of the Nordic seas meets the warmer and lighter water of the Irminger Sea, a real natural phenomenon is created: cold water is heavier, it flows downwards and under the water hot, and flows creating a downward flow estimated at 5 million cubic meters per second. By comparison, the flow rate of Niagara Falls is "only" 2407 cubic meters per second.

Oceanographers were aware of underwater waterfalls as early as the 70s, but their great depth and limited area prevented a precise study. It was only in the 60s that the investigation of the phenomenon became possible with modern equipment and so about half a dozen underwater waterfalls were discovered in the Atlantic Ocean alone.

All of huge dimensions: for example, the Ceara waterfall in the North Atlantic between the continents of South America and Africa has a flow rate between 1 and 2 million cubic meters per second. Similarly, the Rio Grande waterfall at 20 degrees south latitude in the Atlantic Ocean has a flow rate of 4 million cubic meters per second, perhaps as large as that of the Danish Strait.

Ocean waterfalls also play an important role in maintaining the salinity and climate of the oceans, as well as influence marine biology. A wonderful phenomenon, which would be worth admiring up close.
