Half of the coral reefs all over the world has been destroyed in the last 30 years. For the first time, scientists have provided clear evidence and images of the disappearance of one of the havens of biodiversity. This could foster an incentive in the battle for their protection.

Field monitoring the state of coral reefs around the world was an international team of scientists, coordinated by Catlin Seaview Survey (CSS), which showed how fast the planet's coral reefs disappear every day.

Record speed, unfortunately. Every year, between 1 and 2 percent of the world's coral reefs are being destroyed, largely bypollution of the coasts and because of the climate changes.

To create these extraordinary underwater images, the team of Catlin Seaview Survey used special underwater cameras, specially designed to give as little discomfort as possible to the delicate marine ecosystem.

The photos were taken through a spherical case which allows to obtain images 360 degree panoramas geolocated. In this way they were collected further 50.000 fotografie that sewn together will allow anyone to see the state of the Great Barrier Reef and all his other peers in the world.

The hope is that a complete record of the state of the coral reefs of the world, so far never obtained with this detail, can help better protect these paradises of biodiversity threatened by man. This free database will provide scientists with an additional tool to analyze the current state of reef ecosystems on a local, regional and global scale.
