I University of Arizona researchers received a $ 25 million grant to develop a way to communicate with plants and understand their signals. The grant was provided by the National Science Foundation to carry out research through the Center for Research on Programmable Plant Systems.

The goal is to be able to talk better with plants, be able to listen to them e understand their signals. The researchers also hope to modify the circuits in plants, which could allow them to observe what happens when they are stressed by lack of water.

Engineers are working on the development of several cameras, which can be used to see wavelengths invisible to the human eye; they are also working on developing worm-like robots that swim and that could provide information on roots. Furthermore, the team wants to be able to identify some genes, which would make the plant more resistant to drought, thus helping agriculture especially in areas of the world where there is less access to water resources.

The grant funding spans five years, and is potentially renewable for another five, so this could be a project that is around 10 years long.
