Abandoned carcasses, illegal spills, hazardous waste dumps: the 'secret' ingredients of buffalo mozzarella

Animal carcasses and parts thereof, municipal solid waste, packaging, plastic, iron, waste oils, end-of-life vehicles, sheet metal. All abandoned on the bare ground.

This is what the Carabinieri Forestale of Castel Volturno and the Coast Guard Local Maritime Office of Castel Volturno found, which, assisted by the staff of the Veterinary ASL of Caserta and the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Southern Portici (NA), have carried out a joint verification at a buffalo farm in the municipality of Grazzanise (CE).

During the check, the presence of a real one was ascertained illegal landfill, complete with dead animals illegally disposed of. Thrown to the ground like ordinary garbage. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated practice that various investigations conducted in other buffalo farms in the past had already unmasked.

Not only. The company also had an illegal "lagoon / fertilizer" with an extension of 550 square meters, without a perimeter guard ditch; presence of sewage inside the perimeter channels of the company coming from the unloading of the company structures (specifically, from the milking parlor, the calf, the yards and the paddocks); absence of part of the mandatory administrative documentation.

The military carried out samples of underground water and waste water, thus discovering the presence of sewage in the perimeter channels and ascertaining the disposal of the washing water directly in one of the perimeter channels, through the introduction into some wells and in a system of underground collection.

For this reason, they proceeded with the judicial seizure and, with a separate deed, also with the administrative and health seizure of the entire structure, with a ban on the supply of milk.

The owner and manager of the company have been denounced for crimes of environmental pollution and illegal management of special hazardous and non-hazardous waste, agronomic use of livestock manure outside the cases provided for by current legislation and for carrying out transformation interventions. urban planning-building in the absence of a building permit.

Certainly not all livestock companies behave in this way, but the reports of kidnappings in the sector have been going on for years. And the problems are recurring.
