Wuhan bans the illegal consumption and trade of bushmeat for 5 years. The decision comes from the local administration after the coronavirus

Wuhan bans the illegal consumption and trade of bushmeat for 5 years. The decision of the local administration comes after in all these months the coronavirus pandemic has been attributed by numerous experts, precisely to the consumption of bats and other wild animals in the so-called wet markets.

China had already given national provisions on the consumption of wild animals by placing the ban. In March, the Wuhan wet markets, from which the pandemic started, had reopened, but there were no more bats, snakes, pangolins and others on the counter. Let's not forget that among the hypotheses of how the coronavirus developed there is also the consumption of snake meat and bat soups. In fact, during the peak of the pandemic, consumption was declared illegal. Now, in a note taken on social media, the local administration has announced Wednesday that consumption and trade are officially banned.

Wuhan has 11 million inhabitants and has become infamous for being the city from which the outbreak began, but now the ordinance of the Chinese city administration sets very strict rules, stating that it is forbidden to eat, hunt or feed wild animals. , including the terrestrial ones qualified as protected species. Rules that will last five years and then it will be decided what to do. In terms of hunting, a step forward is to have declared Wuhan 'a wildlife sanctuary', with the exception of hunting carried out for scientific research, monitoring epidemic diseases. In short, a half-way victory, above all because we hope that this clause does not replicate the situation that exists in Japan with whales: hunting is in fact prohibited except for scientific purposes, which then gives rise to a slaughter.

Here's what happens in wet markets:

According to the government, there will also be numerous controls on farms, curbing the trade in exotic animals that are often used for traditional Chinese medicine. However, there remains the possibility of legal trade for other purposes such as research and medicine.

However, it is the first time that a plan of this kind has been launched that could finally put an end to everything that is consumed in the wet markets that we have repeatedly talked about, but the ordinance does not mention the issue of dogs and cats (prohibited in two Chinese cities, namely Shenzhen and Zhuhai). Those announcements came following a government proposal that dogs should be seen as "pets" and not food.
