How and when to prune wisteria

Pruning is essential to promote healthy, orderly and harmonious growth of the plant. This must be done twice a year, in summer and in winter. Let's see how to do it in detail.

Summer pruning

La summer pruning takes place between the months of July and August, and consists ofshorten all one-year old branches to about one meter, to stimulate flowering and new growth.

During this operation it is advisable to also delete the suckers and stolons, that is the thicker branches that usually form at the base, and that give a disordered and asymmetrical shape to the plant; in addition, if the wisteria originates from a graft these are usually very large and can even absorb energy and weaken the plant. Winter pruning

La winter pruning of wisteriainstead, it is carried out after the leaves have fallen. If the climate is too harsh, however, the advice is to wait for the end of winter, after the frosts have ended.

During this operation all the branches must be shortened by a year, leaving at least four or five buds; also in this case it is necessary to eliminate the basal suckers, which ruin the harmony of the plant, i dry, damaged and broken branches

Obviously, the advice for optimal pruning is, both in summer and in winter, to eliminate all those parts that take away resources and energy from the plant and that hinder its growth and flowering. If you then want to give it to the wisteria a precise shape, it is good to choose a suitable branch and not cut it, but tie it in the direction in which we want to stimulate growth.
