In these days the terrible images that came from the Faroe Islands where 1.500 dolphins were slaughtered have been around the world. Even in Norway, however, as every year whaling took place with a dramatic toll, the worst in the last 5 years.

There is no peace for the minke whales that populate the Norwegian seas. From XNUMX April hunting was officially reopened which led to a real massacre of these fin whales.

Some animal welfare associations including Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) and France's C'est Assesz, who have shared data on whales that have died during this hunting season on Facebook, are counting the number of specimens killed.

This is a total of 575 Minke whales of which two thirds were female (nearly half pregnant). A massacre (the biggest in Norway in the last 5 years) cruel, useless and meaningless considering among other things that, according to a survey conducted this month, only 2% of Norwegians consume whale meat (a declining figure, in 2019 it was 4% of the population).

In 2020 the whalers massacred 503 specimens, in 2019 429, in 2018 454, in 2017 432, but think that the toll every year could be much more tragic. In fact, even in this hunting season, as for the previous ones, the maximum fishing quota was 1278 specimens. A real madness!

As recalled, among other things, Vanessa Williams-Gray, policy manager of Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC):

This is nothing short of ecocide. Kill hundreds of minke whales it is absolutely unforgivable, especially given the essential role they play in our oceans. Whales are our allies in the battle against climate change.
