Il 90% of the minke whales hunted and killed every year in the waters of the Norway they are female and almost all in the state of pregnancy. This is the disconcerting news that comes out of a documentary aired on the national channel NRK.

The documentary, titled "Battle of Agony" ("Slaget om kvalen" in Norwegian), shows grisly footage of the Norwegian whaling industry, including a gory scene where a fisherman literally rips open a whale and removes the fetus that is in her womb.

A short film that obviously sparked intense protests by animal rights groups, especially in light of the fact that Norway has joined the International Whaling Commission (IWC) ban on commercial whaling.

"One's whaling is now even more unacceptable - comments the head of Greenpeace Norway, Truls Gulowsen. On the one hand because it is in violation of an international ban, but also because it is indefensible from the point of view of animal welfare to hunt them during an advanced stage of gestation “.

In Norway, fin whale hunting began in 1930. To date, the estimated minke whale population counts just over a million specimens. In recent years, Norway has become the leading whaling country, and in the past two years it has killed more whaling than Iceland and Japan combined: a 2016 joint report from the Animal Welfare Institute, OceanCare and Pro Wildlife found found that in 2014 and 2015, Norway killed more whales than Japan and Iceland combined.

In response, Dag Myklebust, the captain of the Norwegian fishing boat Kato on which the documentary was shot, gives his impressive opinion: that the whales are pregnant "is a sign of good health".

Terrifying. "A lot of slaughtered animals are sent to the slaughterhouse when they are pregnant," added Egil Ole Oen, a veterinarian who specializes in whaling. And so they have a clear conscience.

The whalers are not only killing the present generation, but also part of the next generation of whales, the activists observe. A practice that makes no sense, especially in a country that, among other things, can boast zero deforestation policies.

WHALE HUNTING, THE PETITION

This year we have a strategy to say "Norway, stop!". Without media attention, Norway has become the leading global whale killer.

But now a huge wave of indignation can close European ports to their whalers, blocking the sale.
