It is a historical event which, for the first time after years of battles and protests, finds correspondence in a decree regulating the ban. The law of the traditional village (Perarem) is a huge step forward, a goal achieved thanks to educational programs, carried out by the volunteers of many local associations, alongside vaccination, sterilization and adoption campaigns to raise awareness of the inhabitants on the issue.

Among these associations are Four Paws and Bali Animal Welfare Association which have carried out the Program Dharma project aimed at actively involving the communities of the island of Bali by dealing with educational issues in schools and villages.

Education is the key to success in handling rabies and increasing love for animals starting from children. We are very grateful to the Denpasar City Agriculture Office who continues to work hard to keep Bali free from rabies, as well as to SMPN 9 and SMP 12 Denpasar who support this activity. The end is educate the population on respect for animals and the prevention of zoonoses, that is, diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans, such as rabies, the incidence of which on the island is very worrying.

In fact, in 2018 the Indonesian government, following a global mobilization, seemed willing to ban the trade in dog and cat meat due to the risks to human health associated with its consumption. The motivation had nothing to do with animal welfare, but such a choice would consequently have put an end to violence, mistreatment and barbaric killings (which are commonplace in any meat farm).

But now it is official and this regulation confirms it. The new law not only prohibits the trade in these types of meat, but protects dogs and cats, guaranteeing them legal protection according to international standards. The event was celebrated with a big party, which was attended by the mayor of the Sega Traditional Village and other members of the community.

We hope that this decision is an example for other villages and other countries where it is still allowed.
