The many animals kept as pets that had been sentenced to death by the ordinances of the Ministry of Health and the Liguria and Piedmont Regions to counter the spread of African swine fever are safe. In fact, a note arrives from the ministry which establishes the possibility for anyone who can guarantee the well-being of these animals to see a human-animal relationship based on affection and respect and not on exploitation and death recognized and regulated.
The ordinance with which the Liguria Region intended to counter the spread of the African swine fever epidemic and which provided for the "immediate slaughter of pigs held in family farms for self-consumption" left us speechless.

The clarification note signed by the General Director of Animal Health and Veterinary Drugs of the Ministry of Health reports:
However, taking into account that in some proven sporadic situations, suidae are kept for purposes other than livestock or food production, the slaughter procedure is considered derogable for the latter provided that strict compliance with all biosecurity measures useful to avoid infection by PSA and its spread.

This is an important recognition - says Massimo Pigoni, National Vice President of ENPA - that these animals are in effect affection animals. A recognition that is lacking in our legislative system where farm animals are considered as such even when they are treated as pets. Well, therefore, the decision of the Ministry of Health is now important to fill this legislative gap as soon as possible.

Common sense prevailed in providing exclusively bloodless prevention actions, in relation to 'pet' suids - comments the LAV President Gianluca Felicetti and announces a second good news - the Ministry of Health, in fact, opportunely, also announces the 'definition of a measure aimed at the correct registration of this category of pigs and their owners in the national computerized database '. This means this bad story (culling measures had already been formalized in the provinces of Genoa, Alessandria, Verbania and Biella), in addition to the happy ending we have obtained a further result in favor of all 'former zootechnical' animals but kept for the purpose of affection .
