THEEPA, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, has decided to ban the use of the chlorpyrifos on food crops.

Chlorpyrifos is a very pesticide controversial, repeatedly linked to adult and especially health problems children. In the smallest, in fact, exposure to chlorphrifos would cause delays in motor and cognitive development and lower IQs. Clearly chlorpyrios also causes problems for adults and especially for agricultural workers.

For these reasons, as early as 2015, the Obama administration wanted to ban the use of this pesticide, but in 2017 it was decided to continue with further studies before proceeding with a ban.

After more than a decade of studies and tests related to negative effects of chlorpyrifos, today the EPA finally intervened to protect the health of the population and yesterday announced the decision to ban the use of this insecticide

“Today the EPA takes a step forward to protect public health. Stopping the use of chlorpyrifos in food will help ensure that children, agricultural workers and all people are protected from the potentially dangerous consequences of this pesticide. After the delays and denials of the previous administration, the EPA will follow science and put health and safety first, ”EPA administrator Michael Regan said in a statement.

The organizations and associations that over the years had fought to ban the pesticide in crops have expressed satisfaction at the news of the ban.

“Today we celebrate this great victory together with the men and women who harvest our food, who have waited too long for the ban on this pesticide. We are relieved that agricultural workers and their families will no longer have to worry about the myriad of ways this pesticide could impact their lives, ”commented Teresa Romero, president of United Farm Workers.

For the time being, the chlorpyrifos will be prohibited only in food crops, while its use on non-food crops will still be allowed and monitored over time.
