Monsanto, multinational producer of GMO seeds and the controversial Roundup herbicide, will soon find itself on trial, even if only in a "symbolic" way, on charges of crimes against the environment and humanity.
The trial of Monsanto It will take place in The Hague from 12 to 16 October 2016. Among the organizers of the initiative we find Vandana Shiva, with the Navdanya association, Organic Consumers Association, the IFOAM International Federation and dozens of other environmental organizations and associations, social groups and citizens.
The group believes that Monsanto is responsible for a real ecocide. The culmination of the process will be on October 16, on the occasion of World Food Day. In particular, supporters of the process point out that Monsanto in recent decades she took care to realize highly toxic products which have damaged the environment and caused the deaths of thousands of people.
- PCB: substance that endangers animals and human fertility.
- 2,4,5-T: component that was used for the production of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War and which continues to cause cancers and birth defects.
- Roundup: the most widely used herbicide in the world, a source of environmental scandal and a serious threat to health. It is a glyphosate-based herbicide, a substance now recognized by the WHO as a probable human carcinogen.
- Lasso: a herbicide now banned in Europe.
The judgment against Monsanto will be based on the principles dedicated to business and human rights adopted by the UN in 2011. Recognition of the crime of ecocide and of the criminal liability of the multinational for the damage caused to the population.
At work to evaluate Monsanto's work will be found real professionals, including lawyers and jurists, even if the final verdict will have no legal value. The hope is that the initiative will stir the conscience and lead to open the eyes of those who still defend Monsanto.
