A curious sea dweller has found a home in the Fukushima Aquarium, Japan, attracting large numbers of tourists with its nigiri-like appearance

This is neither a photomontage nor a retouched image: this small parasite of the sea, on display in a Japanese aquarium, is a real creature - and in all respects similar to sushi. He is one of the most famous residents of the Fukushima Aquarium in eastern Japan. In a post on Twitter, the aquarium staff shared some photos of the small animal, belonging to the family of isopodi (crustaceans characterized by a long flattened exoskeleton, very common in the sea): more than 10.000 different species belong to this family, which differ greatly from each other in size, color and type of diet.

The nigiri-shaped parasite belongs to the Rocinela species, which includes more than 40 different specimens. While most isopods feed on carcasses of dead animals, isopods of the Rocinela species prefer act as parasites and find 'home' in the internal organs of other marine creatures. Most members of this species appear with a sad brownish tint - which is why the aquarium specimen arouses particular curiosity.

The creature was captured at a depth of about 1.200 meters, and measures only 3 centimeters. The fishermen found it during their fishing activity off the city of Rasau (in Hokkaido, one of the most northerly islands of Japan) and have seen fit to deliver it to the aquarium instead of leave it free in nature, as it should be: despite the sympathy aroused by these images, in fact, life in cages (or in tanks, as in this case) is always a source of discomfort and suffering for animals, who see themselves deprived of their freedom.

An unknown deep-sea creature, the white Undaria undario and a species of the genus Undaria undario, has begun to be exhibited. The person in charge seems to be cute, and a lot of pictures are sent saying "Hey, this angle is good!", But many staff members did not understand. .. .. #Aquamarine Fukushima #Deep sea creatures #Oyashio ice box pic.twitter.com/sW12o3G2F4
