They set fire to a swarm of bees in Pavia: an ignoble gesture against peaceful traveling insects

A swarm of bees was burned in Pavia and only a few insects were saved. It is an opportunity to remember what to do if you spot bees traveling

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

As we have already reported, in these days the swarms of bees are returning to the city. It is a completely natural phenomenon that is called swarming, we must not be afraid nor think of intervening to remove the bees by burning the nest as unfortunately happened in Pavia.

A few days ago  in via Riviera in Pavia, someone set fire to a swarm of bees. These were there because of the swarming that, as we had explained to you in a previous article, occurs when the time has come for the bees to form new colonies: after the birth of a new queen bee, the old one moves elsewhere with a part of the worker bees to form another family.

The swarms of bees are back in the city (but this time the lockdown has nothing to do with it)

The new swarms of bees, temporarily, can stop on the walls of houses, shutters, railings, cars, motorcycles, etc. In short, in a series of places where we don't usually see them. Many people are still unaware of the fact that bees should not be disturbed at this delicate moment in their life. In fact, insects have a full melliferous pouch, they are absolutely peaceful and they only need about 24 hours to find a safe place to settle permanently.

Bees burned in Pavia

Returning to case of Pavia, to tell the whole story of the burned swarm, is the LIV, International League for the Protection of Animals and the Environment, on its Facebook profile, taking up the posts of another page dedicated to animals, Mici Oltrepò. On both pages you can see the many indignant comments from users who recall how important bees are for our ecosystem.

After reporting the intervention of unknown bees, he was called a beekeeper who tried to save insects, but unfortunately the queen was already dead and therefore it seemed too late to secure the swarm, as the surviving bees had flown high where they could not be reached.

It was feared that they would have let themselves die without their queen and instead, fortunately, they returned to the wall and then the beekeeper was able to take them and bring them to safety.

A story, at least in part with a happy ending, which however reminds us of what it is It is important to know what to do in case you encounter a swarm of traveling bees. To give us some suggestions on this is the LIV itself.

What to do (and what not to do) if you see a swarm of traveling bees or honeycombs

How do you explain Giulia Fiori, Naturalist, Molecular Anthropologist and President of LIV Onlus, there is a substantial difference if we are faced with traveling swarms or real permanent nests of bees.

Traveling swarms

In this case the bees are docile and not at all dangerous. They are in fact full of honey in their bags, a substance which they have loaded up as a supply to survive in the period of passage to a new nest. Precisely for this reason it is very difficult for them to sting and therefore they are not a danger. We still have to avoid sudden movements and do not disturb them.

If we see a swarm on a wall, railing or other unusual place, let's spend 24 hours and probably the bees will move on their own, once you have found another safe place to become a resident.

We do not think in any case that we can intervene alone, either by burning the swarm or by spraying toxic products. After 24 hours, if the insects have not moved, a beekeeper must be called which is able to move them safely, without causing any harm to the bees. Alternatively you can call the 115, the Fire Brigade will contact the expert who will know how to best treat the swarm.

Nidi

If the bees have become sedentary, that is, we are in the presence of a real nest, the thing is a little different and could be more dangerous. In this case, in fact, there are guardian bees who watch over the safety of their family.

It is always good not to intervene and keep your distance. In this case it is more than ever necessary to immediately contact a beekeeper, a beekeeping association or the Fire Brigade to recover the swarm. No to do it yourself!

As LIV reminds us: bees are the passport to our survival. Let us never forget this, let us also inform other people of the importance of not harming or disturbing these insects in any way.
