Dozens of pilot whales (or pilot dolphin) got too close to St. Simons Island's East Beach and sadly ran aground. It is not clear why, even if, being whales of the Globicephala species (very social animals that travel in groups of 20 to 90 individuals), it is possible that they followed their pack leader or that they approached the shore to help out. to some of their comrades in danger.

The good news is that many of them were saved thanks to the efforts of numerous swimmers who went to work to allow them to set sail. Volunteers and first responders from Georgia's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) managed to get most of the whales back into the water, allowing them to continue their journey.

Il video, posted on Facebook live from one of the people present on the spot, it went viral.

Unfortunately, two specimens died, one naturally and the other was killed as he was suffering too much and had no chance of recovery.

The Glynn County Emergency Management Agency called the incident "An unusual event" adding, however, that situations like these "show the level of help and support of the community".

Indeed, all of us, in the face of events like these, with a little commitment can make a real difference!
