She went blind and will never return to her natural habitat again due to 74 pellets fired at her body with air rifles. Hope, the orangutan mom rescued by the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program vets is alive, but for her 4-week-old baby there was nothing to be done.

He will never see his little orangutan again, nor will he ever see his forest in Sumatra, Indonesia. All because of man. If deforestation weren't enough to make room for palm oil, to add a new piece to the reckless battle between man and the environment, comes the story of Hope.

Mother orangutan was hit by 74 pellets fired with air rifles, some of which severely injured her eyes making her blind. She was found in this condition, helpless on the ground, next to her dead puppy.

Hope was rushed to the clinic, but in four hours the vets managed to extract only 7 of the 74 pellets, some too close to vital organs. Several fractures to the bones and a great pain, not only the physical one, but that due to the loss of her baby.

An X-ray showed pellets of compressed air in his body, including four in his left eye and two in his right. The orangutan was renamed Hope, hope, for this very reason. He had been spotted with injuries near a farm, but the inhabitants had not been able to get close to rescue the orangutan and the visibly malnourished baby.

As we know, orangutans have a hard time finding food due to deforestation. Added to this is the battle against these beautiful animals, in the last 10 years 15 orangutans had in their body 500 pellets of compressed air in all.

The orangutan conservation program says the use of guns to shoot and kill wildlife is very common. A 2018 study of Bornean orangutans estimates that their numbers have decreased by more than 100 since 1999, as the palm oil and paper industries reduce their habitat and conflicts with people increase.

Recall that the species is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Hopefully Hope can get through this critical period, although sadly she will never be able to return to the wild again.
