Papillon and M57, the two bears held prisoner for months at the Casteller wildlife center in Trento, were castrated months ago

Inside the fortress the bear M49, also known as Papillon, the young specimen, M57, have been locked up for months. Some time ago we showed you the distressing images of the place that has the appearance of a real prison, with small cages of concrete and steel. But now there is also another sad news concerning the two bears held captive: M49 and M57 were also neutered last April. This was revealed by the online newspaper Il Dolomiti, which came into possession of a report from the Cites carabinieri who went to the center for an inspection last June.
The report reveals some improvements relating to the living conditions of bears, but these are really hard to believe.
"It was also reported that the reported situation of psychophysical stress that affected the bears on 10 September 2020, as a result of the forced housing of the subjects in confined spaces, was resolved thanks also to the re-established external housing after the completion of the adaptation works structural work completed in early May "reads the report, as reported on the pages of the Trento newspaper.
Existence at Casteller cannot be definitive life for poor bears
Two more cages have also been built in the past few months. “Although in the limited space available which does not allow us to offer an environment capable of satisfying the ecological needs of bears, they still appear to improve in terms of limiting the risk of escapes”, explain the carabinieri. Until last spring, together with Papillon and M57 there was also Dj3, daughter of the bear Daniza (the specimen brutally killed in 2014 with narcotics after capture). But in early May, Dj3 was moved to a zoo park in Germany.
However, not even the Cites carabinieri were able to provide a complete balance sheet on the actual condition of the poor bears imprisoned in the wildlife center.
“Beyond the sighting of one of the two subjects, it was not possible to carry out in-depth evaluations and observations useful for defining the state of health of the specimens detained” they clarify.
But it is not difficult to imagine how the two animals feel, torn from their natural habitat and forced to live in a gray and cramped environment, often sedated and abused as the reports relating to previous inspections have revealed. It is enough to look at the disturbing scenes documented a few months ago by the Antispecist Assembly collective to understand that that of Papillon and the young bear M57 cannot be defined as life. We want them free without ifs and buts!
