The United Kingdom moves towards a ban on the sale of animal fur

Prohibiting animal furs. This is what ministers in the UK are considering doing after Brexit

Prohibit fur and fur inserts from animals. This is what ministers in the UK are considering doing after Brexit, when the country leaves the EU single market and customs union, early next January.

The proposal is from Environment Minister Lord Zac Goldsmith, a close friend of Prime Minister Boris Johnson (as well as from his girlfriend Carrie Symonds, who has also been an animal rights activist for some time).

So when the UK leaves the EU, it could come to prohibit the import of animal fur in the country, which would effectively prohibit the sale in shops.

The breeding of fur animals, on the other hand, has been banned in Great Britain since 2003. But this does not mean that fur cannot be raised elsewhere and brought into the country from abroad.

According to some leaked documents, and consulted by the Telegraph, the Department of the Environment (Defra) will publish a consultation document on the matter after the end of the Brexit transition period. Goldsmith's May 12 meeting with the executive director of the animal welfare organization Humane Society International would not be a coincidence.

The clues are clear. In 2018, for example, the minister called the fur trade "one of the saddest human activities", while last year to The Mirror he declared:

"Fur farming has been rightly banned in this country for nearly 20 years and at the end of the transition period we will be able to adequately consider measures to further raise our standards."

However, the British Fur Trade Association has obviously already stated that it will lobby against these plans. We'll see if he succeeds ... We obviously hope not!
