The Chon Buri Wheelchair Dog Shelter, Thailand

Since 2011 Michael J. Baines, a Swedish chef living in Thailand, has opened a shelter for street dogs, many of whom are paralyzed

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

'The Man Who Saves Dogs'. This is how Michael J. Baines is known, a Swedish chef who lives in Thailand and who for several years has already opened an animal shelter in order to save some of the more than 800 dogs and cats that live on the streets in this Asian country. Among them also many injured, sick or paralyzed dogs.

The street animal shelter started operating as early as 2011 but Michael did more, in 2019 he decided to open a veterinary and rehabilitation clinic where hundreds of dogs have already been treated.

The shelter located in the province of Chon Buri, in Eastern Thailand, takes care of almost a hundred dogs with disabilities, giving them the opportunity to move again with the help of supports specially designed for them. In addition, the veterinary clinic allows some of these animals to regain some of their lost mobility, greatly improving their quality of life.

Many of these dogs have lost their hind legs, often due to an accident, but they are able to quickly adapt to the "cart" that the volunteers place so that they can resume walking and running.

According to Michael, Thai culture is not used to being sympathetic to street animals, which are often synonymous with disease or a cause for conflict between people. The chef first decided to help dogs and cats directly on the street by feeding them but then he started to collect them with his car on the streets of Thailand and opened the real shelter.

Over time, however, many residents have also supported the project by becoming volunteers, adopting one or more dogs or collaborating with donations.

But now, due to the covid, donations have dropped a lot and Michael is worried about not being able to welcome and treat all the animals he would like. Currently there are about 300 dogs living in the shelter but many others are waiting to be recovered from the road.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to this beautiful project can do so directly from the facebook page of the refuge "The man that rescues dogs".
