Defenseless and succubus with electrodes planted in the brain and holes in the skull. Shocking images are those that come from a laboratory in Belgium, where the monkeys are guinea pigs for brain experiments. The complaint comes from Animal Rights, the organization that launches a new petition to save monkeys from KU Leuven.

In 2019, the Flemish government allocated nearly two million euros to KU Leuven to finance brain experiments on monkeys. Animal Rights raises the alarm and calls for an end to subsidies for animal testing and for public funds to be invested in alternative research that is not the result of mistreatment.

"Taxpayers' money is wasted on cruel animal experiments that the majority of the population would like to see banned," explains animalist Jen Hochmuth.

Undercover, the organization managed to film the fate of these poor monkeys. There are twelve in all and for some time now they have been guinea pigs that live in cages and are subjected to experiments on the brain. Once they are no longer needed, they will be killed.

In an opinion poll 79% of Belgian citizens would like experiments on monkeys to be banned and 64% would mean stop for all animals.
Animal Rights found that € 2017 million was approved via FWO in XNUMX for controversial monkey experiments. Thanks to these experiments, universities have full freedom to decide independently on their projects ”, continues Hochmuth.

At KU Leuven, the researchers say that "it is not ethically justifiable to plant electrodes in humans, while in monkeys, this is justifiable."

Too bad, however, that these brain experiments cause a lot of suffering to the monkeys. Electrodes are implanted into the brain via holes in their skulls and iron devices are cemented. Animals must undergo heavy training programs for months, water-based diets to force them to collaborate with researchers. A situation that has been going on for more than 30 years and that activists have been contesting for years. According to Hochmuth, these experiments are not only morally unacceptable, but also completely useless from a scientific point of view: “These experiments on animals are not legally required for the development of new medicines. They are useless and cruel experiments that only serve to satisfy the curiosity of scientists without compassion, ”he points out.

According to Animal Rights, this is also a violation of the European directive on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. Article 12 explains that animal testing can only be considered if an alternative is not available. Scientists have already carried out numerous measurements on humans who, unlike guinea pigs, can give their consent.

The organization is calling for the release in specialized shelters of all monkeys held in KU Leuven. In total they are more than 40. The animals are used for 7-10 years. Some monkeys undergo several brain surgeries. Let's put an end to this horror:
