A real invasion due to climate change: polar bears no longer find enough food and are increasingly moving towards the Russian settlements in the Arctic, forcing residents to stay indoors.
The images that come from are incredible Belushya Guba, in the archipelago of Novaya Zemlya off the north-eastern coast of Russia, where the population of about 2500 inhabitants, since 9 February is forced to live with 52 polar bears.
The bears go to the houses in search of food, rummage through the garbage, now local officials have declared a state of emergency as there have been episodes in which bears have even entered the houses.
It is not the first time that we have talked about the consequences of climate change of polar bears forced to change even their diet because they are now forced to go to the mainland due to the loss of sea ice. They search for food such as berries, birds and eggs, rummage through trash and plastic.
Rosprirodnadzor, the Russian natural resource protection body, has categorically prohibited shooting even 'the most aggressive specimens', for this reason patrols were organized in the villages to scare the bears, without causing them any serious consequences of survival.
People are afraid, but bears are protected in Russia, so we are looking for a solution that works for everyone: light effects, dogs, more resistant fences.
Residents swear that bears have never before moved so close to homes, but as we said the loss of habitat pushes these animals to behave in a completely anomalous way. While local authorities are trying to sedate the bears and bring them back to the glaciers, the emergency remains: no one is allowed to go out alone or walk.
