Insect enthusiast Deri Saputa found a beautiful and very rare pink grasshopper in nature and shared the images on social media

Have you ever seen a pink grasshopper? There's only a one in 500 chance of finding one, but insect enthusiast Deri Saputa was lucky and wanted to share some beautiful images on social media.





Nature always surprises us. Usually when we think of a pink animal our first thought goes to the flamingo, yet there is also a variety of grasshopper that has just this color. The normal katydide or tettigonid if you prefer, has elements that recall the shape and appearance of a leaf, such as the precise veins present on the wings. Amblycorypha oblongifolia is usually green, but some specimens due to a phenomenon called erythrism, that is a genetic mutation that allows abnormal quantities of red pigment in the absence of "normal" green pigment, are pink.

The pink color, however charming it is to them, is actually not an advantage. Green would allow them to blend in, this shade, on the other hand, makes their life very demanding because they are easy targets for predators. Perhaps this is the reason behind their rarity.
