The scarcity of water in the world on the shoulders of women and children

Today is World Water Day, World Water Day. A day to remember that this precious resource that guarantees our life on Earth is not equally distributed. A very serious and underestimated problem in developing countries, where every 21 seconds a child dies from diarrhea caused by unsafe waters. Today is World Water Day, la World water day. A day to remember that this precious resource that guarantees our life on Earth is not equally distributed. A very serious and underestimated problem in developing countries, where every 21 seconds a child dies due to diarrhea caused by unsafe waters. And the women who take care of bringing the necessary water to the villages travel kilometers after kilometers. With the 200 million hours / work per day, they could have build 28 Empire State Building.

One revealed it study conducted by the World Bank in collaboration with the IRC International Water and Sanitation Center of community water and sanitation projects. The survey looked at data from 45 developing countries, showing that women and children have primary responsibility for collecting the acquisa in most families. This time is not spent working for income generation, for looking after family members, or in the case of children to go to school and study. But only to have water available. In just one day, it is estimated that over 152 million hours of women and girls are spent searching for the most basic of human needs: the collection of water for domestic use. To the point that they can build with their daily work well 28 Empire State Building every day.

But there is also a little piece of good news. Purification projects launched in 88 communities, managed and designed by women, are more sustainable and effective.

The more serious problem, however, concerns the child mortality. Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death among children under the age of five worldwide: approximately 1,5 million deaths each year, nearly one in five. A fact about all: it kills more children than malaria, AIDS and measles combined. 443 million school days lost each year due to water-related diseases. It has also been estimated that around 4.100 children under the age of 5 die each day from diarrhea globally.

Malnutrition, dirty water, inadequate sanitation - all this leads to the death of another 2.350 children under the age of 5 every day. 90% of deaths in children of this age living in developing countries are due to diarrheal diseases.

An absurdity, a shame that should be stopped.
